Description:
WigShield 100/ WigShield 200 is a tablet containing 100 mg & 200 mg of Cefpodoxime. Cefpodoxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. The full chemical name for Cefpodoxime is 1-propan-2-yloxycarbonyloxyethyl (6R,7R)-7- [[(2Z)-2-(2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetyl) amino]-3- (methoxymethyl)-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2carboxylate.
Mechanism Of Action:
A broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria are susceptible to cefpodoxime’s action. When beta-lactamase enzymes are present, cefpodoxime remains stable. Consequently, a large number of organisms that are resistant to cephalosporins and penicillins may be susceptible to cefpodoxime because they produce beta-lactamase. Cefpodoxime is inactivated by certain extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. The bactericidal activity of cefpodoxime results from its inhibition of cell wall synthesis. The active metabolite of cefpodoxime binds preferentially to penicillin binding protein 3, which inhibits production of peptidoglycan, the primary constituent of bacterial cell walls.
Microbiology:
Cefpodoxime’s main spectrum of activity is against gram-negative bacteria in the family Enterobacteriaceae (excluding Pseudomonas) including Escherichia, Proteus, and Klebsiella, and gram-positive streptococci (not enterococcus) and Staphylococci.
Class: Antibiotics (third-generation cephalosporin)
Indication / Usage:
In dogs, cefpodoxime is indicated for the treatment of skin infections caused by Staphylococcus intermedius, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus canis, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Pasteurella multocida. Although not currently approved for cats, it may also be useful as well.
Dosage and administration:
Dogs:
a) For susceptible skin infections: 5-10 mg/ko PO once daily. Should be administered for 5-7 days or 2-3 days beyond cessation of clinical signs, up to a maximum of 28 days. If there is no visible response to therapy, treating acute infections shouldn’t be done for longer than three to four days. May be given with or without food.
b) For staphylococcal skin infections: 5-10 mg/kg PO q12h
c) For susceptible infections: 5-10~mg/kg PO twice daily
Cats:
a) For susceptible skin and soft tissue infections: 5 mg/kg POq12h or 10 mg/kg PO once daily.
Direction for use:
Disperse the tablet in a tablespoonful of boiled & cooled water immediately before use or as directed by the Veterinarian.
Overdoses / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:
Cefpodoxime is contraindicated in pets with known hypersensitivity to it or other cephalosporins. Patients with considerably reduced renal function may require adjustments to dosages and/or frequency of dosing since cefpodoxime is eliminated via the kidneys. In animals with epileptic problems, use with caution.
Although usage of this drug in veterinary patients remains limited to date, it appears to be tolerated very well. The most likely adverse effects seen with this medication have been inappetence, diarrhoea, and vomiting. Hypersensitivity reactions are a possibility.
