Description:
Carpade Injection (Carprofen) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug of Aryl-propionic acid class of NSAIDs. Carprofen is a crystalline compound white in colour, freely soluble in ethanol but practically insoluble in water.
Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent which is non narcotic, with characteristic analgesic and antipyretic activity. Like other NSAIDs mechanism of action of carprofen believed to be associated with inhibition of cyclooxygenase activity. Carprofen is a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-COX-2 over cyclooxygenase-COX-1. Cyclooxygenase selectivity would be expected to minimize adverse gastrointestinal & renal effects while effectively reducing o inflammation. The specificity of a particular NSAIDs for COX-2 versus COX-1 may vary from species to species. Carprofen is highly bound to plasma proteins & well distributed in the tissues with the highest concentrations found in kidney and liver followed by fat and muscle. Maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) of carprofen is 10.4 µg/ml after 7.2 hours (Tmax) at 1.4 mg/kg body weight subcutaneously. In cattle elimination half-life ranges from 44.5 to 64.5 hours where as in horses elimination half life ranges from injection. Carprofen has the 23.7 to 43.3 hours after intramuscular longest serum half-life amongst registered NSAIDs used in cattle.
