Description / Action: 

Metaflam tablets contain meloxicam. Meloxicam is an NSAID (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) of the oxicam class which inhibits prostaglandin synthesis. Meloxicam has analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-exudative effects. Meloxicam inhibits COX-2 (more than COX-1). Meloxicam causes inhibition of collagen-induced thrombocyte aggregation to a minor extent.

Indication / Uses:

Meloxicam / Metaflam is indicated

  • Treatment and relief of pain and inflammation.
  • Management of chronic and acute pain management.
  • Management of musculoskeletal pain/osteoarthritis.

Dosage and administration:

Meloxicam @ 0.2 mg/kg bodyweight on the first day i.e. One tablet of 1 mg for 5 kg bodyweight and One tablet of 2.5 mg for 12.5 kg bodyweight

For maintenance @ 0.1 mg/kg bodyweight i.e. one tablet of 1 mg for 10 kg body weight and one tablet of 2.5 mg for 25 kg (2.-25 kg) body weight.

It is for oral administration only and can be mixed with the food. Tablets can be divided according to bodyweight for appropriate doses. If improvement is not seen after 10 days treatment should be discontinued. A clinical response is seen usually within 3-4 days.

Overdoses / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:

Overdose may result in serious side effects and GI signs like vomiting or hematemesis, diarrhoea, fecal occult blood/melena, dark or tarry stools, loss of appetite. Nervous signs like ataxia, seizures, sleepiness, hyperactivity, depression, or trembling may be seen with the administration of meloxicam (rare). Urticaria, allergic dermatitis, moist dermatitis, focal alopecia, eczema, or pruritis can be observed (rare). Elevated blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels and renal failure like serious adverse effects may occur. Hepatic issues like jaundice and elevated liver enzymes are can be associated with meloxicam (rare).

Do not use in dogs having bleeding disorders, gastrointestinal, renal or hepatic issues. Patients that are on diuretic therapy or dehydrated are at greater risk of renal toxicity. Do not use meloxicam in combination with steroids or other NSAIDs, aminoglycoside antibiotics, and anticoagulant agents.

An appropriate wash-out period should be considered before switching between NSAIDs or Steroids to avoid complications or any adverse effects.

Pet owners should be warned and informed about possible side effects/ adverse reactions like increased urination, increased water consumption, anaemia (pale gums), jaundice (yellowish gums, skin or conjunctival mucous membranes), lethargy, seizures, incoordination, and behavioural changes so that can be reported on time.

Do not give an empty stomach. Self-medication may result into serious complications and side effects. Even maybe lethal for your pet. Always consult your veterinarian before starting the medication.

Not recommended for cats by the manufacturer. Meloxicam can cause acute renal failure and death if used repeatedly. Additional injectable or oral meloxicam administration should not be avoided in cats.

Store in a cool and dry place at room temperature or below 30°C. Protect from light. Keep reaching out of the children. Strictly for veterinary use. For oral use in dogs only.

Safety: Age / Pregnancy/ Withdrawal:

Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to any active substance or excipients. Safety for breeding and lactating animals has not been instructed. Use in animals less than 6 weeks of age and less than 4 kg body weight is warned.

Always follow the recommended dose. It has no reported withdrawal side effects.
