Metaflam oral suspension contains meloxicam which is an NSAID (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) of the oxicam class which inhibits prostaglandin synthesis. Meloxicam has analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-exudative effects. Meloxicam inhibits COX-2 (more than COX-1).

Each ml of Metaflam oral suspension contains
Meloxicam BP                     1.5 mg
Aqueous base                       q.s.

Description / Action: 

Meloxicam is an NSAID (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) of the oxicam class which inhibits prostaglandin synthesis. Meloxicam has analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-exudative effects. Meloxicam inhibits COX-2 (more than COX-1).

Indication / Uses:

Meloxicam / Metaflam is indicated

• Treatment and relief of pain and inflammation.
• Management of chronic and acute pain management.
• Management of musculoskeletal pain.

Dosage and administration:

Metaflam oral suspension dosage

4 drops / kg bodyweight on the first day (@ 0.2 mg/kg bodyweight) e.g. 1 ml for 7.5 kg bodyweight

2 drops / kg bodyweight as maintenance dose (@ 0.1 mg/ kg bodyweight) e.g. 1 ml for 15 kg bodyweight

It is for oral administration only.

Overdoses / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:

Overdose may result in serious side effects and GI signs like vomiting or hematemesis, diarrhoea, fecal occult blood/melena, dark or tarry stools, loss of appetite. Nervous signs like ataxia, seizures, sleepiness, hyperactivity, depression, or trembling may be seen with the administration of meloxicam. Urticaria, allergic dermatitis, moist dermatitis, focal alopecia, eczema, or pruritis can be observed. Elevated blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels and renal failure like serious adverse effects may occur. Hepatic issues like jaundice and elevated liver enzymes are can be associated with meloxicam.

Do not use in dogs having bleeding disorders, gastrointestinal, renal, or hepatic issues. Patients that are on diuretic therapy or dehydrated are at greater risk of renal toxicity. Do not use meloxicam in combination with steroids or other NSAIDs.

An appropriate wash-out period should be considered before switching between NSAIDs or Steroids to avoid complications or any adverse effects.

Pet owners should be warned and informed about possible side effects/ adverse reactions like increased urination, increased water consumption, anaemia (pale gums), jaundice (yellowish gums, skin or conjunctival mucous membranes), lethargy, seizures, incoordination, and behavioural changes so that can be reported on time.

Do not give an empty stomach. Self-medication may result in serious complications and side effects. Even maybe lethal/fatal for your pet. Always consult your veterinarian before starting the medication.

Not recommended for cats by the manufacturer. Meloxicam can cause acute renal failure and death if used repeatedly. Additional injectable or oral meloxicam administration should not be avoided in cats.

Store in a cool and dry place at room temperature or below 30°C. Shake well before use. Protect from light. Keep reaching out of the children. Strictly for veterinary use. For oral use in dogs only.

Safety: Age / Pregnancy/ Withdrawal:

Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to any active substance or excipients. Safety for breeding and lactating animals has not been instructed. Safety in animals less than 6 weeks of age has not been established.

Always follow the recommended dose. It has no reported withdrawal side effects.
