Biomox Amoxicillin Oral Suspension
Biomox oral suspension contains amoxicillin which is a broad-spectrum, semisynthetic antibiotic. It has bactericidal effects on a variety of widespread gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Amoxicillin chemically is D-(-) α-amino-p-hydroxybenzyl penicillin trihydrate. Similar to ampicillin, it exhibits bactericidal effect against susceptible organisms.

Description / Action:
Biomox oral suspension contains amoxicillin which is a broad-spectrum, semisynthetic antibiotic. It has bactericidal effects on a variety of widespread gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Amoxicillin chemically is D-(-) α-amino-p-hydroxybenzyl penicillin trihydrate. Similar to ampicillin, it exhibits bactericidal effect against susceptible organisms.
It works by preventing the bacterial wall mucopeptides’ production. Most strains of the gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria listed below, including nonpenicillinase-producing staphylococci, alpha- and betahemolytic streptococci, Streptococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, and Proteus mirabilis, have shown amoxicillin susceptibility in both in vitro and in vivo studies.
Amoxicillin is not effective against does not penicillinase-producing bacteria, particularly resistant staphylococci because it does not resist destruction by penicillinase. All strains of Pseudomonas and maximum of Enterobacter and klebsiella strains are resistant.
Stability in gastric acid makes it convenient to give without regard to meals. It is rapidly absorbed and diffuses readily into most body fluids and tissues following oral administration. In case of meningitis, it penetrates CSF and blood brain barrier otherwise diffuses poorly into the brain and spinal fluid. After administration majority of the amoxicillin is excreted in the urine in unchanged form.
Class: Antibiotics (Amino-penicillin)
Indication / Uses:
Indicated in the treatment of the following infections in dogs when caused by susceptible strains of organisms:
-
- Bacterial Dermatitis
Caused by Streptococcus spp.; Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli.
and Staphylococcus spp.
-
- Soft Tissue Infections (like abscesses, wounds, lacerations)
Caused by Streptococcus spp.; Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus spp.; and E. coli.
Like other all antibiotic therapy, appropriate in vitro cultures and sensitivities should be conducted prior to treatment.
Dosage and administration:
The recommended dosage is 5 mg per pound of body weight.
To be administered twice daily for 5 to 7 days.
Don’t discontinue until 48 hours after all symptoms have subsided. If improvement is not noticed in 5 days, the diagnosis should be reconsidered and therapy needs to be changed.
Directions For Mixing Oral Suspension:
Add the recommended quantity of water to the bottle as indicated in the table below and shake vigorously to mix it well. Each mL of reconstituted suspension will contain 50 mg of amoxicillin as the trihydrate.
Bottle Size Amount of Water to Add for Reconstitution
15 mL 11 mL
30 mL 21 mL
Species: Oral Use in Dogs Only.
Over-dosage / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:
Contraindicated in animals with a known history of an allergic reaction to penicillin.
Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic penicillin and, therefore, has the potential for producing allergic reactions. Epinephrine and/or steroids should be administered if an allergic reaction occurs.
For use in dogs only.
Pharmaceutical precautions / Instructions:
