Description / Action: 

SafeHeart contains Pimobendan as an ingredient. Pimobendan is a non-sympathomimetic, a non-glycoside inotropic drug having a vasodilator effect. It is a benzimidazole – pyridazinone derivative. Pimobendan has a dual mechanism of action. It increases in calcium sensitivity of cardiac myofilaments and inhibition of phosphodiesterase (type III) which exerts a stimulatory myocardial effect. After oral ingestion pimobendan is demethylated and conjugated with sulphate or glucuronic acid and excreted in faeces.

Indication / Uses:

SafeHeart / Pimobendan is indicated in dogs for

• Management of signs of the mild, moderate or severe (modified New York Heart Association = NYHA class IIa, IIIb, IVc) congestive heart failure
(Class II Heart Failure – Fatigue, Shortness of breath, coughing etc  apparent with ordinary exercise is exceeded,
Class III Heart Failure – Comfortable at rest but the exercise capacity is normal,
Class IV Heart Failure – no capacity for exercise and disabling clinical signs are present)

• Management of arterioventricular valvular insufficiency (AVVI)
• Treatment and management of Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)

Dosage and administration:

Pimobendan / Safe Heart @ 0.5 mg/kg body weight per day total dose.

Divide the total dose into two parts and give at 12 hours intervals (divided parts of the tablet may not be necessarily equal).

Strictly for oral administration in dogs.

Route: Oral, Can be mixed/given with the food

Species: Cardiac drug for oral use in dogs only

Duration: Dogs suffering from cardiac issues may need lifelong therapy.

Over-dosage / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:

In the case of overdose seek the veterinarian’s advice immediately.

Common side effects of pimobendan or safeheart in dogs are poor appetite, dyspnea, lethargy, azotemia, diarrhoea, and weakness. Serious adverse effects may be like ataxia, pleural effusion, syncope, cough, ascites, heart murmurs, and death.

Never use without proper diagnosis and veterinarian’s advice.

Pharmaceutical precautions / Instructions: 

Store in a cool and dry place between 25°C to 30°C. Not for use in humans. In case of accidental ingestion by humans immediately consult a physician.

Safety: Age / Pregnancy/ Withdrawal:

Safety for the use in breeding and pregnant animals has not been determined. Safety in dogs less than 6 months of age, diabetes mellitus, congenital heart issues, or other serious metabolic diseases. Safeheart can be used along with other medicines like furosemide, digoxin, enalapril, atenolol, spironolactone, nitroglycerine, antiparasitic drugs, antibiotics like penicillins, fluoroquinolones, metronidazole; topical ophthalmic and otic or ear products, thyroid medicines, butorphanol, metoclopramide, etc.

Always follow the recommendations. Withdrawal may result in serious side effects. Always follow your veterinarian’s advice and other supportive medications may be needed according to the severity of the cardiac problem and condition of your pet.

Habit-forming:  May need lifelong medication for cardiac issues
