Description:

Galibor oral suspension contains ursodeoxycholic acid which is a secondary bile acid. It helps in the treatment of chronic hepatitis, cholangitis, cholangiohepatitis and cases of cholestasis that do not present with biliary obstruction in dogs and cats.

Action / Pharmacodynamics:

After oral administration, ursodeoxycholic acid / Galibor oral suspension suppresses hepatic synthesis and secretion of cholesterol. It decreases intestinal absorption of cholesterol. By reducing cholesterol saturation in the bile it allows the solubilization of cholesterol-containing gallstones. It also increases bile flow and in patients with chronic liver disease, it apparently reduces the hepatocyte toxic effects of bile salts by decreasing their detergent action and may protect hepatic cells from toxic bile acids. Pharmacokinetics

GALIBOR oral suspension is well absorbed from the small intestine after oral administration. After absorption, it enters the portal circulation. In the liver, it is extracted and combined (conjugated) with either taurine or glycine and secreted into the bile. Only very small quantities enter the systemic circulation and very little is detected in the urine. A limited amount of conjugated and free drug is degraded by bacteria after each entero-hepatic cycle; ultimately, the majority of the drug is excreted in the faeces after being oxidised or reduced to less soluble molecules.

Class: Hydrophilic Bile Acid (Liver Supplement) / Secondary Bile Acid / Choleretic, cytoprotective and immunomodulatory

Indication / Uses:

GALIBOR oral suspension is indicated for the treatment of inflammatory hepatobiliary diseases that occur with hepatobiliary cholestasis, in dogs and cats.

Due to its choleretic cytoprotective and immunomodulatory properties, its use is useful in cases of chronic hepatitis, cholangitis, cholangiohepatitis and cases of cholestasis that do not present with biliary obstruction.

Dosage and administration:

Dogs: 2-3ml/10kg body weight once daily or divided into twice daily

Cats: 0.2-0.3ml/kg body weight once daily or divided into twice daily

After the patient has demonstrated improvement in the biochemical markers for liver disease, it is advised that treatment be continued for 3 to 4 months.

For use in dogs and cats only.

Overdoses / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:
