Cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad spectrum of action against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Use of Cephalexin in canines is aimed at treating bacterial infections of skin, wound, respiratory, urinary tract and bone.

The bactericidal activity of cephalexin is due to its ability to inhibit the bacterial cell wall synthesis. It acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins located under the cell wall of susceptible bacteria thereby inhibiting the formation of cross linkages between peptidoglycans resulting in lysis of cell wall and death of the bacteria.
