Description / Action:

Cephalexin/Cefalexin is an antibiotic of the first-generation cephalosporin group. Cephalexin/Cefalexin has both gram-negative and gram-positive activities. It binds to proteins involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis.

Cephalexin has greater activity against Staphylococci and gram-negative bacteria. It has excellent activity against Staphylococcus spp, Streptococcus spp, E. coli, Proteus, and Klebsiella.

Cephalexin belongs to the cephalosporin family of bactericidal antibiotics. Like other ß-lactam antimicrobials, cephalexin exerts its inhibitory effect by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis. This interference is primarily due to its covalent binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) (i.e., transpeptidase and carboxypeptidase), which are essential for the synthesis of the bacterial wall.

Cephalexin is readily and almost completely absorbed following oral administration (90% absolute bioavailability). Blood concentrations are proportional to dose within the range of at least 15 to 45 mg/kg. Binding to canine plasma proteins is low, ranging from 9 to 13% cephalexin concentrations of 0.5 to 100 µg/mL.

Food reduces the peak cephalexin concentrations but has negligible effect on the extent of absorption.

Class: Antibiotic / Cephalosporin (1st Generation)

Indication / Uses:

Cephalexin / Cefalexin / Cephavet is indicated in dogs and cats for

• Primary or secondary bacterial Skin infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Respiratory tract infections
• Bone and joint infections

Dosage and administration:

Cephalexin / Cefalexin / Cephavet can be in given

Dogs @30 mg/kg  or 3 ml/5 kg bodyweight every 24 hours or once daily

Cats @20 mg/kg or 1 ml/2.5 kg bodyweight every 24 hours or once daily

(For Dogs, recommended dose is 15 mg/kg of body weight twice or 30 mg/kg of body weight once a day. For cats, recommended dose is 20 mg/kg once a day. Appropriate culture and susceptibility tests should be performed before treatment to determine the causative organism and its susceptibility to cephalexin. Antimicrobial therapy should be adjusted according to the tests. If acceptable response to treatment is not observed, then the diagnosis should be re-evaluated and appropriate alternative therapy considered.)
