Description / Action:

Phoslure tablets contain sevelamer carbonate which is a calcium-free, aluminium-free, non-metal phosphate binder for dogs & cats. It supports kidney health in dogs and cats suffering from hyperphosphatemia.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common, irreversible, and progressive disease in dogs and cats.

In patients with CKD, mineral and bone disorders occur due to impaired kidney function.

Hyperphosphatemia is known to be a prognostic factor for shorter survival time in dogs with CKD.

Therefore, prevention and management of hyperphosphatemia may improve the prognosis of dogs and cats with CKD.

Shortcomings With Current Phosphate Binders:

Calcium-based phosphate binders
•Risk of hypercalcemia
•Increased risk for soft tissue and vascular calcification, and may also be a risk factor for calciphylaxis.
•Restriction of total intake of calcium prevents the use of calcium-containing binders at doses sufficient to adequately control serum phosphate.

Lanthanum carbonate
•Concern of accumulation of lanthanum in bone, liver, and gastric mucosa reported

Aluminium containing phosphate binders
•Risk of aluminium toxicity; reported in dogs with renal disease after 2 to 6 weeks on doses of 126 to 200 mg/kg/day of aluminium hydroxide
•Signs of toxicity includes lethargy, neurologic signs, progressive microcytosis microcytic anaemia
•Evaluation of red blood cell (RBC) in all animals receiving aluminium-containing phosphate binders is suggested

Chitosan based phosphate binders
•Persistent low levels of serum phosphorus even after discontinuation of therapy attributed to a residual effect of chitosan bound to the intestinal tract because of its muco-adhesive properties
•Reduction in PTH levels

Class: Phosphate Binder

Indication / Uses:

Sevelamer is indicated in dogs and cats for

•Treats hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease without the risk of hypercalcemia or aluminium toxicity
•Significantly slows the progression of vascular calcification as compared to calcium phosphate binders
•Reduces cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Dosage and administration:

Cats & Small Dogs 1/2 tablet 2-3 times daily with meals
Medium & Large dogs 1 tablet daily with meals

Ref: Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook 6th ed.

Direction for use:

Dissolve one tablet in 5-10ml of water. Draw the solution in a suitable syringe and administer directly in mouth of the pet.

Overdoses / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:

Sevelamer is contraindicated in dogs and cats suffering from hypophosphatemia or low serum phosphorus levels, bowel obstruction. Not recommended in pets having a known history of hypersensitivity for sevelamer carbonate or sevelamer hydrochloride.

Dosing of other drugs at least before 1 hour or after 3 hours is suggested as sevelamer may reduce the absorption of certain drugs and vitamins if administered with it.

Acute toxicity potential appears to be negligible because it is not absorbed from the gut. Read the product label and package insert carefully.

Pharmaceutical precautions / Instructions:

Keep in a dry place at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees centigrade. Protect from light. Veterinary. Not for human use.

For use in dogs and cats only
