EFFIPRO Fipronil Spray

Fipronil 0.25% W/V Cutaneous Spray Solution for Dogs and Cats

Manufactured / Mktd by: Virbac

Dosage form: Liquid

Presentation:

80 ml bottle with spray pump

Ingredients & Composition:

Fipronil 0.25% W/V

Description / MOA:

Effipro Spray contains fipronil which is an insecticide and acaricide belonging to the phenylpyrazole family. Its action results in an uncontrolled activity of central nervous system and death of insects or acarids. Fipronil has insecticidal and acaricidal effects on ticks (Rhipicephalus spp. and Ixodes spp.), fleas (Ctenocephalides spp.), and lice (Trichodectes spp. and Felicola spp.) in dogs and cats.

The product may aid in control of a number of ectoparasite species in dogs and cats, including mites infestation like Neotrombicula autumnalis, Sarcoptes spp. and Cheyletiella spp. Treatment with the product has shown to result in significant reduction in the incidence of flea allergy dermatitis in both dogs and cats.

Pharmacokinetic particulars:

After applying the spray to the coat and skin, the amount of fipronil absorbed by the dog’s skin is extremely low to nonexistent. Given that the assay method’s limit of quantification is 0.25 µg/g, fipronil persists on hair for a fairly long time (on average 52.5 11.5 days).

Category: Ectoparasiticides for topical use

Indication / Uses:

Ectoparastie infestation control and treatment like –

• Ticks
• Fleas
• Lice
• Aid in control of mites

Dosage:

The recommended minimum dose of fipronil is 6.7 mg /kg b.w.

Route of administration:

Mechanical pump for cutaneous use only.

The pump delivers 0.5ml per spray.

 Method of administration:

Remove seal completely. Attach spray pump to the neck of the bottle and tighten. Apply the spray from a distance of about 10 to 20 cm all over the animal’s body. Apply against the lay of the hair and make sure that the entire coat of the animal is dampened. For long-haired animals in particular, fluff the coat to allow the product to reach the skin.

For treatment of the head region, and when treating young and nervous pets, application may be carried out by spraying into a gloved hand and rubbing into the coat. Allow to dry naturally. Do not towel dry.

The formulation contains a coating agent. Spraying creates a film and makes the fur shiny as a result.

Advice On Correct Administration:

The treatment plan can be based on the regional epidemiological circumstances for the best control of a flea and/or tick infestation. The product is active up to 3 months against fleas in dogs and up to 2 months in cats, depending on the environmental challenge. Depending on how challenging the environment is, it can keep dogs and cats free of tick infestations for up to a month. When used as a part of the strategy for the treatment of flea allergy dermatitis, monthly applications to the allergic patient and to other cats and dogs in the household are recommended. The minimal treatment interval in the absence of safety studies is 4 weeks.

Directions for Use:

In order to dampen the coat down to the skin, apply 3 to 6 ml per kg body weight (7.5 to 15 mg of active ingredient per kg body weight), depending on the length of the hair. This dosage can be achieved with 6-12 pump applications per kg body weight.

Overdoses / Side effects / Contraindications:

Use with caution if your pet has a history of known hypersensitivity to any of the excipients or the active ingredients. Transient cutaneous reactions like pruritus, erythema at the application site and general pruritus may occur after topical use of the product.

Don’t use in rabbits as adverse reactions and even death can occur.

Special warnings for each target species:

The medicine is not advised for the treatment of species other than cats and dogs due to a lack of specific tolerance and efficacy data. Avoid contact with the animal’s eyes. Do not spray directly onto areas of broken skin. It is important to make sure that the animals do not lick each other following treatment. Dogs should not be allowed to swim in the water courses for 2 days after application. For optimum efficacy, it is recommended to bathe or shampoo animals two days prior to or following treatment with the product. It has been demonstrated that bathing or shampooing up to four times in a period of two months has no appreciable impact on the product’s residual potency. When shampooing more frequently, a monthly treatment is advised. There may be ant attachment of a single tick. As a result, if the environment is adverse or not favourable, the transmission of infectious diseases cannot be entirely ruled out.

For optimum control of flea problems in multi pet household, all dogs and cats in the household should be treated with a suitable insecticide. The person giving the veterinary medicine to the animals must take special measures. This product can cause mucous membrane and eye irritation. Therefore, contact of the product with mouth and eyes should be avoided. Animals or operators with a known hypersensitivity to insecticides or alcohol should avoid contact with the product. Avoid contents coming into contact with fingers. If this happens, wash hands with soap and water. After accidental ocular exposure, the eyes should be rinsed carefully with plain water. Treated animals should not be handled until the fur is dry and children should not be allowed to play with treated animals until the fur is dry. Therefore, it is advised that animals should be treated at night rather than during the day and that recently treated animals not be permitted to sleep with owners, especially young children. Animals should be sprayed outside in open air or in a room with good ventilation. Do not breathe spray. Do not smoke, drink or eat during application. Wear nitrile ro PVC gloves applying fipronil to animals. It is recommended to wear a waterproof apron for protection of clothing. If clothing becomes heavily wetted with the product, it should be removed and washed before re-use. Dispose of gloves after use and then wash hands with soap and water. Wash splashes from skin with soap and water immediately. If irritation occurs, seek medical advice. People with known sensitivity or asthma may be particularly sensitive to the product. Do not use the product if you have previously experienced a reaction to it.

Treatment of multiple animals:

When treating multiple animals, proper ventilation is very crucial. Treat multiple animals outside, or reduce the build-up of vapour by removing the animals from treatment room while alcohol is evaporating and ensure that the treatment room is well ventilated between individual treatments. Additionally, make sure the drying area is well-ventilated and refrain from putting multiple animals that have recently received treatment in the same air space.

Other precautions:

Treatment of bedding, carpets and soft furnishings with a suitable insecticide will aid reduction in environmental challenge and maximize the duration of protection against re infestation (provided by product). The product is not suitable for direct treatment of environment. Allow treated animals to dry in a well-ventilated room. Animals should not be kept in a cage or pet carrier until their coats are completely dry. Keep treated animals away from fires or other sources of heat and surfaces likely to be affected by alcohol spray, for at least 30 minutes following spraying and until the fur is totally dry.
