Description:

Wigepsy 500 mg Tablets contain Levetiracetam that belongs to the Pyrrolidine class. It is effective in the treatment of various types of seizures (fits) in dogs and cats resulting from epileptic disorders.

Mechanism Of Action:

The mechanism by which Levetiracetam exerts its antiepileptic effects are not clearly defined. It is thought that binding to the distinct protein synaptic vesicle protein 2A serves as the most important mechanism of action (SV2A). SV2A protein is a part of secretory vesicle membranes that mediate calcium-dependent vesicular neurotransmitter release. The binding of LEV to SV2A appears to decrease the rate of vesicle release.

While having no direct impact on GABAergic or glutamatergic receptors, levetiracetam has also been found to indirectly influence GABAergic neurotransmission and regulate ionic currents. Levetiracetam has also been demonstrated to block N-type calcium channels in vitro. It is yet unclear how, or even if, these activities contribute to its anti-epileptic activity.
