How to use VisioAid Shirmer’s Tear Test Strips:
Do not expose the dog’s eye to any topical medication or any manipulation prior to performing the test. Place the dog’s eye away from direct light, adequately resting the head. Open the strips sachet as indicated in the adjoining figures on monocarton.
Step 1: Peel of the sachet using the thumbs and the index finger on both hands.
Step 2: Pull open the session to about half its length.
Step 3: Gently remove the strip holding the flat end.
Restrain the dog and place the test strip inside the lower eyelid. Insert the rounded end of this strip into the lower conjunctival sack, while the dog looks up making sure that the strip is securely placed. Place the strip for at least 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Remove the strip and refer to the graduated scale on the strip to record the distance of tear migration.
Count the time (usually upto 1 minute) and mark the progression of tear flow on the strip.
Measure the wet area of the strip and compare with normal values.
Blue dye of the strip helps in the easy marking and measurement of the tear production on the strip.
