Information about L-Carnitine:
L-Carnitine is synthesized (25%) in the liver and kidney from precursors like methionine, lysine, niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 & Iron. It is a conditionally essential amino acid. The remaining 75% of daily L-carnitine requirement is obtained from dietary source like red meat. Grasses, vegetables and Cereals, are very low in L-carnitine.
L-Carnitine is in the essential process of transporting fats into cells for energy (ATP) production, Specifically, carnitine is required for transporting long chain fatty acids and their derivatives into the mitochondria of cells (semen and the heart, epididymis, kidney, skeletal muscle and liver).
Carnitine is also believed to prevent the toxic accumulation of acetyl CoA compounds in muscles. Acetyl CoA are trapped in ester form and then transported to the liver for processing, and lastly to the kidney for excretion. Like this carnitine plays protective role in prevention of metabolic acidosis.
Cats do not synthesize L-Carnitine at all and are 100% dependant on dietary sources of L-carnitine.
L-carnitine helps in the metabolic conversion of fat that’s why it is an essential aid in the treatment of obesity.
Due to dependence of cardiac muscles on fatty acids for energy carnitine is vital for the management of cardiac diseases in both dogs and cats. Carnitine also plays an important role in the management of hepatitis and hepatic lipidosis.
Kidney disease also needs supplementation of L-carnitine because it is synthesized to some extent in the kidneys.
By supplementing L-carnitine in older dogs mental aging can be reversed and it also improves cognition in older dogs.
Supplementation of L-carnitine in breeding male dogs and cats increases sperm motility and maturation.
Skeletal muscle is the storehouse of L-carnitine so supplementation greatly helps in dogs with skeletal muscle dysfunction.
