Pooch Atova tablets contains atovaquone which is a broad-spectrum antiprotozoal drug. - Babesia gibsoni
It is a drug used to treat infections caused by protozoa (single-celled organisms that cause disease). It works by stopping the growth of protozoa that can cause Babesiosis
This can also be used in combination with azithromycin for the treatment of Cytauxzoon felis in cats (off label).
What is Babesiosis?
Babesia is an important tick-borne protozoal disease of dogs. The parasites replicate in the red blood cells and initiate a mechanism of antibody-mediated cytotoxic destruction of circulating erythrocytes. The most common findings in canine babesiosis are fever, anemia, jaundice, hemoglobinuria, depression, and weight loss.
Dosage/ Administration / Feeding Directions:
13.2 mg per kg body weight thrice in a day Along with 10 mg per kg body weight azithromycin once in a day for 10 days.
It should be given with fatty meals preferably to maximize its absorption. This frequency and dose are likely to bring parasitaemia below the detection level in PCR. Effect may last upto 4 to 6 weeks.
Avoid doubling up the dose or give extra dose in case of a missed dose.
Overdosage / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:
No information is available in the literature regarding side effects of atovaquone and azithromycin in animals. Use of atovaquone in combination with proguanil hydrochloride may result into high chances of GI side effects like nausea, vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. It may also cause skin rashes in susceptible animals.
In case of overdose or adverse reaction/ side effect call your veterinarian immediately.
Atovaquone should be avoided in pregnant female dogs. Should not be administered in animals having history or hypersensitivity for atovaquone.

Store at room temperature (15°-25°C or 59°-77°F). Keep reaching out of the children. Refer the product label or package insert for additional information.
