Description / Action: 

Chlorhex Spray contains chlorhexidine gluconate as an active ingredient. It helps in the management of bacterial dermatological conditions in dogs and cats.

Mechanism of action:

A) The positively charged Chlorhexidine molecule is attracted to the negatively charged phospholipids in the cell wall
B) Chlorhexidine binds to the cell wall causing it to rupture
C) Due to cell wall rupture fluid leak leads to lysis and cell death

Action against bacteria:

Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a positively-charged molecule that binds to the negatively-charged sites on the bacterial cell wall. The uptake of CHX by bacteria such as E. coli and S. aureus was very rapid and depended on the CHX concentration and pH with a maximum effect occurring within 20 seconds. Damage to the outer cell layers takes place and CHX crosses the cell wall, plasma membrane and cytoplasm of bacterial cells. Intracellular components leak when the fragile semipermeable membrane is damaged. At high concentrations of CHX cause coagulation of these intracellular constituents. At the high concentrations of CHX, it causes coagulation of intracellular constituents resulting in a rapid bactericidal effect.

Action against fungi:

When the fungus absorbs CHX, it quickly damages the cell wall’s integrity and the plasma membrane, allowing cell contents to seep out and leading to cell death.

Action on biofilms:

CHX has demonstrated some capacity to aid in inhibiting microbe adhesion to a surface, preventing the establishment, growth and development of biofilms.

Action in topical applications:

With minimal systemic or body absorption, CHX has the extraordinary capacity to attach to the proteins found in human tissues including skin and mucous membranes. CHX that is attached to proteins slowly releases, resulting in extended action. This feature permits antibacterial activity to last longer against a variety of bacteria and fungi. The antibacterial effects of CHX have been shown to persist on skin for at least 48 hours. Unlike povidone-iodine, CHX has more rapid action, persistent activity despite exposure to body fluids and a residual effect.

Indication / Uses:

For mild to severe bacterial dermatological conditions in dogs and cats.

Directions for use:

Shake well before each use. Spray directly on affected areas twice or thrice a day except eyes, nose and mouth or as directed by a veterinarian. Let the animal be air dried.

Avoid spraying in eyes, nose and mouth. Intentional misuse by concentrating and inhaling the contents may be harmful. Keep out of reach of children.
