Flunixin Meglumine I.P.     83 mg
Equivalent to Flunixin         50mg
Phenol I.P.                           5 mg
(As preservative)

Description & Mechanism of Action: 

Megludyne Injection contains Flunixin meglumine which is a potent, nonsteroidal, nonnarcotic, analgesic drug with anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activity.

Flunixin acts via analgesic and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Analgesic actions may involve blocking pain impulse generation via a peripheral action by inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins and possibly inhibition of the synthesis or actions of other substances, which sensitize pain receptors to mechanical or chemical stimulation. Flunixin may act peripherally at inflamed tissue, by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase to decrease the formation of precursors of prostaglandins, and by inhibiting other local mediators of the inflammatory response.

Indication / Uses:

Cattle, Sheep, Goat, Camel & Pigs: For control of Pyrexia and Inflammation associated with mastitis, metritis, Pneumonia (Bovine Respiratory Disease) & Endotoxemia (septicemia).

Calves: To control pain and inflammation associated with dehorning and castration.

Horse: i) Indicated for alleviation of inflammation and pain-associated with musculoskeletal disorders

ii) To control of visceral pain associated with colic.

Dogs: Indicated for pyrexia, musculoskeletal disorders, post-operative pain and inflammation.

Dosage and Administration:

Cattle, Sheep & Goat: 1.1 mg to 2.2 mg flunixin per kg body weight or 1ml to 2ml per 45 kg body weight, given by slow I/V or I/M Injection route. It can be given either once a day as a single dose or divided into two doses and administered at 12 hour intervals up to 3-5 days

Dogs: 1 mg per kg body weight administered by slow I/V or I/M injection route.

Camel: 1.1 mg to 2.2 mg per kg body weight or 1 ml to 2 ml per 45 kg body weight, given by slow I/V or I/M injection. It can be given either once a day as a single dose or divided into two doses and administered at 12 hour intervals up to 3-5 days.

Horse: 1.1 mg per kg body weight or 1 ml per 45 kg body weight, given by slow I/V Injection route, once daily up to 3-5 days,

Pigs: a) 1 mg to 2 mg flunixin per kg body weight given by S/C Injection or slow I/V injection route

b) MMA Syndrome: 2.2mg flunixin per kg body weight given by 1/M route at 12 hourse interval (2 injections only)

Zoo Animals:

Elephants: 1 mg per kg body weight given by I/V, I/M or S/C route

Non-Human Primates (Monkeys, Apes etc.,): 0.5-4 mg per kg body weight by S/C or I/V injection route

Birds: 1mg-10 mg per kg body weight by 1/M injection route

Reptiles: 0.1 mg to 0.5 mg per kg body weight by 1/M or 1/V injection route

Overdoses / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:

There are no known contra indications to this drug when used as directed.

In all indicated species, except under special circumstances, Megludyne Injection should not be used when the following medical conditions exist

• • Bleeding Disorders
  • Gastro Intestinal Disorders
  • Hypersensitivity to Flunixin Meglumine
  • Avoid Intraarterial usage
  • Do not administer to animals under general anaesthesia until fully recovered
  • Avoid using in dehydrated, hypotensive animals, as there is potential risk for enhanced renal toxicity.

Horses intended for racing should be prevented from racing or competition when in need of regular Megludyne treatment. Those horses which have been recently treated with it should be dealt with according to the local racing compliant requirements.

Do not administer other Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs simultaneously or with in a gap of 24 hours with Megludyne treatment.

Animals under treatment should be avoided simultaneous administration of potentially nephrotoxic drugs.

It should be administered slowly and should be used at body temperature.

If any signs of hypersensitivity are observed during Megludyne administration, the injection should be immediately stopped and the treatment for shock should be started.

Horse: Drug compatibility should be closely monitored in patients requiring co-therapy with other drugs during treatment with Megludyne Injection

Contraindicated for use in cats.

Pharmaceutical precautions / Instructions: 

Store in a cool and dry place. Not for human use. For animal treatment only. If solution is not clear or contains suspended matter, please do not use the solution.

Safety: Age / Pregnancy/ Withdrawal:

Do not exceed recommended dose or duration.  Use With Caution in Animals Under Six Weeks of Age.

The effects of Flunixin at the time of parturition have not been evaluated in controlled environment. But, NSAIDs are known to have the potential to delay parturition through tocolytic effect.

Should be used with caution in pregnant animals. The effects of Megludyne Injection (Flunixin Meglumine) on reproduction in bulls and horses intended for breeding purpose have not been studied.

In cows, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have the potential to affect the onset of oestrous cycle or of parturition.

Withdrawal period:

Milk: 48 hours after last administration

Meat (Cattle): 14 days after last administration

Meat (Horse): 28 days after last administration

Meat (Pigs): 24 days after last administration
