Description / Action:
Sucralpet Oral Suspension contains sucralfate which is an anti-ulcer agent that is theorized to react with stomach acids to form a protective barrier at ulcer sites. This barrier is resistant to the common digestive agents in the stomach.
Pharmacodynamics:
Sucralfate works by creating a coating or barrier over the ulcer, protecting it from stomach acids and allowing it to heal.
Sucralfate reacts with hydrochloric acid in an acidic environment of the stomach and forms a cross-linking, viscous, paste-like material. This paste is capable of acting as an acid buffer for duration of 6-8 hours. It also attaches to proteins on the surface of ulcers, such as albumin and fibrinogen, to form stable insoluble complexes. These insoluble complexes serve as protective barriers at the ulcer surface, preventing further damage from low gastric pH, secreted acids, and enzymes like pepsin and bile salts. In addition, it also prevents back diffusion of hydrogen ions and absorbs both pepsin and bile acids. It also promotes bicarbonate production and acts like an added buffer with Cytoprotective properties.
Class: Antacid / Cytoprotectant
Indication / Usage:
• Sucralfate is used in the treatment and prevention of oral (mouth), oesophagus (food tube), stomach and intestinal ulcers.
