What is Veterinary medicine?

Veterinary medicine is the branch of Science that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, disorder and injury in non-human animals.

Bachelor of Veterinary Science or B.V.Sc. is an undergraduate course in veterinary science. Some universities offer B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree. Although it is suggested to go for both B.V.Sc. and AH as it widens up the level of a veterinarian in terms of getting better job opportunities and experience. The course deals with surgery and handling of animal live-stocks. Besides surgery, a person needs to take care of zoonotic as well as non-spreading of diseases in animals. It also includes advices regarding medicine and vaccination of the same. It is possible to opt for practice in either large animals such as cattle, buffalo including horses, pigs, sheep, exotic animals; poultry or small animals mainly household pets including dogs, cats, birds or both. The approach in treatment varies according to different animal species. 

Subjects: Nutrition, physiology, biochemistry, parasitology, anatomy, pathology, animal breeding and genetics, livestock production and management, livestock products and technology, public health, gynaecology and obstetrics, medicine; surgery and radiology. It also includes ambulatory practices, study circles and some non-credit courses.

After one is done with Bachelor’s in Veterinary Science, the person can look forward to Masters in Veterinary Science or M.V.Sc. in more than 15 subjects, which is a 2 years course, to get a higher degree and deeper knowledge about veterinary concepts.

  
How to Get Admission in Bachelor of Veterinary Science [BVSc]

Admission to most of the veterinary colleges in India is based on the results obtained in the NEET, or entrance exams conducted by the concerned universities, Veterinary Council of India (AIPVT) for admission to first year of Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) & Animal Husbandry (AH) degree course for filling up seats of each veterinary college of all states. Only 15% seats of the VCI recognized colleges are filled with other state candidates who have qualified the test on merit basis. College can be changed in the second year of degree from which depends on the vacant seats in that college and on merit basis of received applications. Entrance exams are usually held in the month of May each year.

The admission in B.V.Sc. courses are being done on the basis of Score of NEET exam since 2019 in most of the colleges or universities. Some colleges / universities have management or NRI  or NRI sponsored, OCI funded admissions quota but may need to fulfil eligibility criteria.

For M.V.Sc. (Master of veterinary science) course 15% quota of recognised colleges is filled by entrance exm conducted by Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) and for rest of the seats state universities conduct tests.

Eligibility Criteria:

Students who have passed 10+2 or senior secondary examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects are eligible for this course. Students with agriculture along with physics and chemistry are not eligible.

Duration of course:

The duration of this course is a minimum of 5.5 years which includes 1 year of internship. Fee structure is variable in different states of India. Payments seats offered by some colleges charge around 2.5 lakh INR extra along with regular fees depending upon institutes.

Salary / Income:

A bachelor of Veterinary Science can get employment in various sectors like government animal husbandry departments, poultry farms, dairy farms, Wildlife sanctuaries and zoological parks, private and government veterinary hospitals and clinics where one can earn from 25,000 to 50,000 on an average per month depending on the skills. Specialization and good practice can make it increase many fold.
