Description:
Vetina KBr Tablets and Oral Suspension contains potassium bromide and cynocobalamine for management of epilepsy or seizures in dogs and cats. By preferential movement across neuronal membranes via gamma-aminobutyric (GABA) – activated chloride channels, bromide may aid in controlling seizures through hyperpolarization of neuronal cell membranes, leading to stabilization and decreased sensitivity of epileptic foci.
Class: Anti-epileptics
Indication / Usage:
- Seizures & Anxiety
- Bromides are used both as primary therapy and as adjunctive therapy to control seizures in dogs that are not adequately controlled by phenobarbital alone.
- While historically bromides were only recommended for use alone in patients suffering from phenobarbital hepatotoxicity, bromides are more frequently used as a drug of the first choice.
Dosage and administration:
To achieve a serum level of approximately 1 mg/mL, give 120 mg/kg PO daily for 5 days then reduce 30 mg/kg PO once daily.
