Ropinirole Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution: 30 mg/mL

Each 0.3 mL dropper: delivers 9 mg Ropinirole, as stated by the manufacturer.

Description / Action

Ropidrop Ophthalmic Solution contains Ropinirole 30 mg/mL for dogs provides rapid, controlled induction of emesis through convenient ophthalmic administration in veterinary emergencies.

Ropidrop Ophthalmic Solution contains ropinirole, a selective dopamine D2/D3 receptor agonist. It stimulates the Chemoreceptor Trigger Zone (CTZ) and activates the central emetic centre to produce a controlled vomiting response and facilitate gastric decontamination.

Emesis is typically reported in the supplied literature within 5–15 minutes after administration.

Indication / Uses

Induction of emesis following appropriate ingestion of potentially toxic substances.

Rodenticide ingestion.

Human medication ingestion, including NSAIDs, paracetamol, antidepressants and cardiac drugs, when caught early.

Chocolate & xylitol toxicity.

Selected chemical/foreign-material ingestion when emesis is clinically appropriate.

Dosage and administration

Ophthalmic administration only; dose according to body weight:

• • If vomiting does not occur within 20 minutes, repeat the same dose once.
  • Hold the dog’s head upright and instill drops without touching the eye.
  • The dropper is single-use and should be discarded 30 minutes after opening.

Overdose / Side effects / Contraindications / Warnings

Do not use in:

• • Dogs with CNS depression, seizures or marked neurological impairment.
  • Unconscious or severely depressed animals.
  • Dogs with high aspiration risk.
  • Ingestion of sharp foreign objects.
  • Corrosive/caustic agents.
  • Volatile substances or organic solvents.
  • Dogs with corneal ulceration, ocular irritation or ocular injury.
  • Known hypersensitivity to ropinirole or excipients.

Possible adverse effects include protracted vomiting, salivation, lethargy, tremors, transient tachycardia, transient reduction in blood pressure and ocular irritation such as conjunctival hyperaemia, blepharospasm and third-eyelid protrusion.

Pharmaceutical precautions / Instructions

For dogs only.

Administration should be performed by veterinary personnel.

Wear gloves and protective eyewear during handling.

Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye.

Monitor vomiting, activity, hydration and the patient’s overall condition after administration.

Ropinirole may be less effective when dopamine antagonists, neuroleptics or other antiemetic drugs have been administered.

Safety: Age / Pregnancy / Withdrawal

Safety has not been established in dogs <4.5 months of age or <4 lb (≈1.8 kg).

Not recommended for breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs.

Use with caution in dogs with cardiac disease/cardiovascular compromise or hepatic impairment because safety has not been adequately evaluated.

Withdrawal period: Not applicable.
