Description:

Midocarus injection contains imidocarb dipropionate an anti-protozoal. It is used for the treatment and prevention of blood protozoans like Babesia, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia in different animal species like dog, cattle, sheep, goat and horse.

Mode of action:

Imidocarb acts by combining with nucleic acids of DNA in susceptible organisms, causing the DNA to unwind and denature. It is thought that this DNA damage prevents cellular repair and replication. Midocarus (Imidocarb Dipropionate) exerts its action through two mechanisms

i. Interference with the production and/or utilization of polyamines,
ii. Prevention of entry of inositol into the erythrocyte containing the parasite

Pharmacokinetics:

Imidocarb Dipropionate when administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly in lactating and non-lactating cattle reaches its peak level at a mean level of 1.3 ppm equivalents 1 hour after injection. Milk levels peaked at a mean 0.37 ppm Imidocarb Dipropionate equivalents 24 hours post administration. It is excreted slowly from the body mostly via urine. It takes almost 10 days post-dosing for excretion of half the dose.

Class: Antiprotozoal

Indication / Uses:

For treatment of babesiosis in cattle, sheep, horses and dogs.
• Treatment of anaplasmosis in cattle.
• Treatment of ehrlichiosis in dogs.

Sheep: 0.5 ml per 50 kg bodyweight Horses: 2 ml per 100 kg bodyweight (intramuscular injection is preferred). A single dose will usually result in a full recovery, although treating B. equi infections in horses may necessitate two doses spaced by 24 hours.

Dogs: 0.25 ml per 10 kg bodyweight. For the treatment of combined infections caused by Ehrlichia and Babesia, give two doses of 0.5 ml per 10 kg of body weight spaced 14 days apart.

After one treatment, it is advised to check the blood for the parasite’s presence. If the test is positive, continue your treatment.

Prevention:
