Neuroprotective action of Curcumin

• Protects against neurotoxin damage
• Improves SOD (Superoxide dismutase) and glutathione levels
• Reduces oxidative stress
• Improves dopamine and acetylcholine levels
• Upregulates NGF (Nerve growth factor) and TrKA (Tropomyosin receptor kinase A)

Neuronal Ageing
• Ageing shows:
      • Increase in lipid peroxidation and lipofuscin (an age-related pigment)
• Decrease in SOD, glutathione and ATPase
• Curcumin reverses age related alterations in neuronal regions, showing anti-ageing effects
• Long term treatment with curcumin significantly reduced age-related elevation in lipid peroxidation and lipofuscin contents in brain regions.
• The treatment significantly reversed age-related declines in activities of SOD, glutathione and ATPase.

Curcupet in Nerve Injury

• Nerve damage leads to degeneration, damage and apoptosis of neurons.
• Curcumin increases NGF (Nerve growth factor) levels which help regeneration and improve neuronal function.
• Curcumin significantly reduces apoptosis caused due to oxidative stress (H2O2).
• Polyphenols in Curcumin scavenge free radicals protecting neurons from damage.

Curcumin in Epilepsy

• Cellular injury due to free radicals causes epileptic seizures.
• Curcumin ameliorates seizures, oxidative stress and cognitive impairment.
• Curcumin can be used as an adjuvant in epilepsy both to prevent seizures as well as to protect against seizure induced memory impairment.
