Description / Action:

AlphaCALM Injection (20 mg/mL) is a high-concentration medetomidine injection for controlled sedation, analgesia and immobilisation in veterinary and wildlife practice.

High-concentration, fast-acting, fully reversible alpha-2 sedation — maximum potency in minimal volume for darting, zoo use and large-animal field immobilisation.

Medetomidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist producing sedation, analgesia and muscle relaxation. Its effects can be antagonized with atipamezole

Dosage and Administration:

It specifies:

• • IM (Intramuscular): Preferred route for field darting and wildlife immobilisation.
  • IV (Intravenous): For controlled clinic sedation — administer slowly to effect.

IV: 0.75 mg/sq. meter BSA

IM: 1 mg/ sq. meter BSA

Midazolam (0.1 mg/kg) + Medetomidine (0.05–0.07 mg/kg) IM

Reversal: Atipamezole (0.25–0.35 mg/kg) IV/SC.

Horses:

Sedation: 10 mcg/kg IM

Important: Because this is a 20 mg/mL high-concentration formulation, the dose should be calculated specifically for the target species and individual procedure rather than applying the dose/volume of standard 1 mg/mL medetomidine products.

Overdoses / Side Effects / Contraindications / Warnings:

General medetomidine precautions include:

• • Alpha-2 agonists can cause bradycardia and cardiovascular changes.
  • Medetomidine should generally be avoided or used with particular caution in animals with cardiac disease, respiratory disease, impaired liver/kidney function, shock or severe debilitation.
  • Sedation should be allowed to reach its peak before beginning procedures; this may take approximately 10–30 minutes depending on route.
  • Overdose may produce excessive/prolonged sedation and cardiovascular/respiratory depression and requires appropriate supportive management.

Pharmaceutical Precautions / Instructions:

• • Administer only by a veterinarian or trained professional.
  • IV administration should be slow and titrated to effect.
  • For wildlife darting, use appropriate immobilisation protocols and species-specific dosing.
  • Atipamezole may be used for reversal of medetomidine sedation; it is an established antagonist of medetomidine.
  • Keep the animal in a quiet environment during onset and recovery.

Safety: Age / Pregnancy / Withdrawal

Age: Avoid use in neonates and young animals.

Pregnancy/Lactation: Not recommended for use in pregnancy.

Withdrawal: The leaflet specifically presents use in wildlife, horses, cattle and other large-animal field applications; withdrawal requirements should therefore be checked according to the target species and jurisdiction.
