Staphban Ointment

Staphban ointment has mupirocin 2.0% w/w in a water-soluble base. It has antimicrobial property and its unique structure is different from any other class of antibiotics. Its mode of action makes mupirocin different from other classes of antibiotics and there is no cross-resistance with gentamicin, lincomycin, chloramphenicol, neomycin, erythromycin, novobiocin, penicillin, tetracycline, and streptomycin. Mupirocin is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Description / Action: 

Staphban ointment has mupirocin 2.0% w/w in a water-soluble base. It has antimicrobial property and its unique structure is different from any other class of antibiotics. Mupicin works by blocking protein synthesis in bacteria by inhibiting enzymes helping in RNA synthesis (isoleucyl transfer-RNA synthetase).   Mupirocin is produced by fermentation of Pseudomonas fluorescens. This mode of action makes mupirocin different from other classes of antibiotics and there is no cross-resistance with gentamicin, lincomycin, chloramphenicol, neomycin, erythromycin, novobiocin, penicillin, tetracycline, and streptomycin. Mupirocin is effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Indication / Uses:

  • Staphban (mupirocin) is indicated in skin infections specifically by virulent MRS (methicillin-resistant staph) strains.
  • Mupirocin 2 % ointment can be used on burns and wounds.
  • Postoperative care is best managed with mupirocin ointment.
  • Mupirocin ointment can be used for the treatment of superficial bacterial pyoderma caused by Staphylococcus intermedius and Staphylococcus aureus.

Frequency:

Apply twice daily.

Dosage and administration:

For dermatological use in dogs.

Prior to application lesion should be cleansed.

Apply a sufficient amount of mupirocin ointment to completely cover the affected area.

The maximum duration of the treatment should not exceed one month period.

Overdoses / Side effects / Contraindications /Warnings:

An overdose of mupirocin ointment is unlikely to occur and if this happens seek for veterinarian’s advice. May cause sensitivity in animals having a known history of reaction with any of its ingredients. Do not use beyond 30 days. Mupirocin 2% ointment is not meant for ophthalmic purposes. No adverse reactions have been reported with staphban ointment. In the case of skin reaction or adverse reaction, discontinue the treatment and consult the veterinarian.

Store in a cool and dry place. Protect from direct sunlight and do not freeze.

Safety for the use in breeding/ pregnant animals has not been determined.
